Locating Block
Locating Block can be used for batch processing, which ensures that all materials are located at the same position, thus improving the speed and stability of batch processing.
Internal Engraving Support
The bracket for internal engraving serves as a supporting and positioning tool during use. During the internal engraving process of crystal, if the position of the engraving model is relatively low and the focal point is close to the top plate of the bracket, the top plate of the bracket may be damaged. Please use it with caution.
5. Machine Maintenance
Always disconnect the power supply before maintaining the marking machine.
Do not touch the lenses of the field lens or galvanometer with your hands directly.
6.1 Field Lens Cleaning
Environmental factors or improper use may contaminate the field lens, which will affect laser marking. In such cases, it is necessary to clean the lens with a lint-free cloth or dust-free paper moistened with ethanol.
6.2 Galvanometer Cleaning
After removing the field lens, the two internal galvanometer mirrors can be seen. They are generally protected by the field lens and thus free of dirt. Only in very rare cases when contamination occurs, they need to be cleaned with a lint-free paper or cloth moistened with ethanol, and must not be touched directly by hands.
Failure to keep optical components clean in a timely manner may lead to minor issues such as power attenuation, degraded beam quality and poor processing results, and in severe cases, may even cause permanent damage to the optical components!
6.3 Cleaning of Exhaust Purification Module
The exhaust purification module consists of a fan, a metal channel, and an exhaust pipe.
Do not rinse or immerse the fan module in water, as this may damage the circuit.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. No engraving effect
Dust, grease or other particulate matter on glass can block the penetration of ultraviolet laser, as lasers are prone to being scattered or absorbed by surface impurities. These contaminants may carbonize under laser irradiation, further impeding energy transfer and preventing the formation of internal microcracks required for engraving.
Grease or moisture forms an optical interface that alters the refraction path of the laser, causing the focal point to deviate from the intended depth. This misalignment hinders energy concentration inside the glass. Additionally, microbubbles may form when the liquid is heated, disrupting the energy distribution and impairing the engraving quality.
Improper settings, such as defocus, excessive speed, or inappropriate pulse frequency, will prevent the laser from reaching the energy threshold required for internal adjustment. Improper focusing or speed restricts stress induction, while inappropriate pulse frequency affects energy accumulation and inhibits the formation of microcracks.
The energy density of ultraviolet lasers is limited. If the power is lower than the critical threshold for internal engraving, the laser cannot break the molecular bonds in the glass. This results in negligible structural changes, producing only faint marks or no noticeable effect at all, even if the parameters themselves are correct.
2. Blurred or indistinct engraving results
Directly engraving a 3D model without adjusting its scale to match the glass thickness, effective engraving depth and laser focal length may cause part of the model to fall outside the engraving area, resulting in misaligned or distorted details. Furthermore, if the model dimensions do not align with the laser travel range, the edges may be compressed or overlapped, leading to blurred output.
Excessively powerful ultraviolet lasers may generate an excessive number of micro-explosion points inside the glass. These defects often overlap or spread, blurring boundaries and reducing clarity. Excessive energy may also cause internal stress fractures, resulting in a cloudy or diffuse appearance, and in severe cases, even complete loss of details.
Excessive dot pitch will result in incomplete gaps and engraving graininess. Insufficient spacing will cause energy overlap, leading to the fusion of adjacent details. Incorrect layer height — too high a value leads to visible streaks, while too low a value causes oversaturation — will disrupt depth gradients and structural accuracy, resulting in blurred contours and reduced model fidelity.
3. Internal Cracks in Materials
When the power of the ultraviolet laser exceeds the threshold required for internal glass engraving, the concentrated energy triggers intense micro-explosions within the material. This not only produces the intended micro-cracks but also gives rise to irregular, long-lasting fissures. These fissures may propagate and interconnect, compromising the integrity of the engraved contours; in severe cases, they can even lead to extensive internal fracturing, rendering the engraving unusable.
Excessively slow speed will prolong the laser exposure time, causing the energy to exceed the tolerance threshold of the material. This will amplify the micro-explosion effect, magnify micro-cracks and promote the uncontrolled propagation of cracks. The resulting cracks are usually rough and uneven, impairing the definition of details and the overall visual quality.
Instructions for Curved Surface Marking
How to mark on curved surfaces with Xlaserlab E3
1. Notes Before Curved Surface Marking
-
The distance between the highest point and the lowest point on the curved surface shall not exceed 10 centimeters.
-
Sudden height changes, sharp corners, and inclined surfaces are not supported.
Curved surfaces are measured based on optical principles. Excessive reflection from the material may lead to inaccurate measurements.
2. Connect Xlaserlab E3 to EDone.
3. Open EDone on the computer and select curved surface marking in the marking mode
4. Border Walking and Focusing
The maximum curved surface marking range of Xlaserlab E3 is 70mm*70mm. You can adjust the marking range at position "2" in the figure below. The frame walking function can be used to preview the marking range, and you can select any point on the curved surface (usually the center point of the marking area) as the focal point for focusing.
5. Measure the density
After confirming the target processing area, click "Next "
-
EDone provides a recommended measurement density based on the size of the selected area. You can adjust the measurement density by modifying the rows and columns.
The more rows and columns there are, the higher the measurement density, the more accurate the model, but the longer the measurement time will be.
-
Click " Start Measurement ", and the device will measure the height of each point on the selected area.
-
After the measurement is completed, EDone generates a 3D model. To rotate and pan the model for viewing, operate with the left and right mouse buttons.
-
Click Finish. The selected and measured area will be displayed as the processing area on the canvas.
6. Import Graphics

Instructions for Color Carving Operation
I. Introduction to the Ultraviolet Laser Metal Color Engraving Process
1. Core Principle
Ultraviolet laser wavelength 355nm cold light source, which is different from the pure thermal processing of optical fiber at 1064nm:
-
Dual effects: photochemical oxidation + low-heat accumulation;
-
When the surface of stainless steel is irradiated by laser, metal oxide films of different thicknesses (chromium oxide, iron oxide) are formed;
-
Utilizing the principle of thin-film interference: with different oxide layer thicknesses, the wavelengths of reflected visible light vary, presenting colors including black, gray, gold, yellow, red, purple, blue and green;
-
Ink-free and pigment-free, physico-chemical coloring with scratch resistance, corrosion resistance and non-fading properties.
2. Common Metal Materials
1.304 stainless steel (the most commonly used and primary material)
Reasons:
-
With a high chromium content, it readily forms a uniform and dense oxide film under laser irradiation, delivering excellent coloration via thin-film interference;
-
Widest color coverage: capable of stably producing gold, red, purple, blue, black and bronze;
-
Oxidation-resistant, not easy to rust, with the color carving layer featuring strong adhesion, wear resistance and no color fading;
-
Most widely used on the market: universally applicable for nameplates, accessories, kitchenware, hardware and gifts;
-
Moderate hardness, and no deformation or edge burning after UV cold processing.
2.316 Stainless Steel (Special for High-end Color Carving)
Reason:
-
Its corrosion resistance is far superior to that of 304 stainless steel, making it ideal for bathroom fixtures, medical equipment and outdoor hardware.
-
The oxidation reaction is more controllable, delivering a finer texture and a premium matte finish;
-
Stable composition with minimal color difference in mass production;
Disadvantages: Slightly slower coloration under the same parameters, requiring fine-tuning of power / speed.
3. Titanium Alloy (High-end Color Engraving)
Reason:
-
Titanium readily forms oxide layers with controllable thickness, endowing the colored engravings with extremely high saturation and vivid colors;
-
Biocompatible and lightweight, applicable for jewelry, medical devices, and watch cases;
-
Heat-resistant, fade-proof, and the ultimate benchmark for color layer stability;
Disadvantages: High cost, and mainly applicable to small industrial parts.
3. Color rendering logic of stainless steel colored carvings
All color adjustments rely solely on these four fine-tuning controls for switching:
-
Laser power: The higher the power, the thicker the oxide layer, and the color gradually changes from light to dark (gold → red → purple → blue-black)
-
Marking speed: The slower the speed, the longer the heating/oxidation time, and the darker the color
-
Pulse frequency:
-
Low frequency: Strong heat accumulation → Dark and black color families
-
High frequency: Cold working, oxidized thin layer → Light color, gold / yellow / light red
-
defocus
-
Negative defocus (focus shifts downward): Light spot converges, energy is dense → Cool colors (blue, cyan, purple)
-
Positive defocus (focal point upward): soft light spot, uniform heat → warm colors (gold, yellow, red, brown)
-
Focus: Fine etching, grayish and light color tones
4. Process Advantages and Application Scenarios
-
Advantages
-
Consumable-free, eco-friendly and non-corrosive;
-
Stable in color, friction-resistant and sweat-corrosion resistant;
-
Minimal heat-affected zone, no deformation on thin-walled and mirror-finish stainless steel.
-
Common application scenarios: color logo engraving on stainless steel jewelry, kitchenware, hardware nameplates, medical devices, cultural and creative gifts, and bathroom hardware.
II. Notes
1. Pre-treatment: It has a greater impact on color uniformity than parameters (the most easily overlooked factor)
-
It is mandatory to achieve "zero oil stain and zero fingerprint"
-
Wipe unidirectionally with anhydrous alcohol/acetone + lint-free cloth, apply immediately after wiping, and do not touch the area with your hands afterward.
-
Even a single fingerprint will leave a color difference or white spot once printed, which cannot be wiped off afterwards.
-
Do not clean with detergent or water under any circumstances, as residual water stains will directly cause discoloration and uneven coloration.
-
The surface condition of the substrate shall be uniform
-
For workpieces from the same batch, the surface roughness and polishing method must be consistent. For 304 stainless steel from different batches, differences in alloy composition or surface passivation layer will directly lead to unstable color.
-
When producing colored carvings on mirror-finish stainless steel, uneven interference colors are more likely to occur than on brushed-finish surfaces. It is recommended to test the color on a scrap piece first.
2. Equipment and Calibration: A Slight Difference, a Huge Disparity in Color
-
Color engraving must be performed using the central area of the lens
-
When using a 150mm field lens for color engraving, try not to engrave the full working area, as the edge will suffer from uneven spot energy due to field lens distortion, resulting in chromatic aberration and deformation.
-
It is recommended to consistently use the central area of ≤110×110mm and avoid the edges.
-
Focusing must be precise, and confirmation is required before each shot
-
The focal position determines the spot size and energy density; even a 1mm defocus deviation will cause the color to change.
-
It is recommended to use a focusing block or red light focusing assist, fix the position properly before testing the color.
3. Parameters and Technology: The Core Logic of Color Carving
-
Fix the parameters first, then adjust the color levels, and don’t tweak multiple variables randomly
-
When adjusting the color, only modify one parameter at a time (for example, only change the speed while keeping others unchanged), otherwise you will have no idea which factor has affected the color at all.
-
Use scrap pieces to create a "parameter test matrix", record the corresponding colors under different power/speed/defocus settings to build your own color calibration chart, and avoid blind testing every time.
-
Line spacing and scanning method determine color uniformity
-
The recommended line spacing for color engraving is 0.02~0.05 mm, with back-and-forth filling to avoid streaky color differences.
-
If the line spacing is too wide, light-colored streaks from the underlying layer will show through; if it is too dense, local heat accumulation will occur, resulting in excessively dark color or even yellowing due to overheating.
-
Color is not a single parameter, but a combination of "energy + defocus + number of pulses"
-
Gold / Yellow: High frequency + Fast speed + Slightly positive defocus, with a thin oxide layer.
-
Red / Purple: Medium frequency + Medium speed + Zero / Slightly negative defocus.
-
Blue / Black: Low frequency + slow speed + positive defocus (black requires stronger heat accumulation).
-
To achieve more saturated color payoff, you can use the technique of "applying a light base layer then layering a darker shade on top", which delivers more consistent results than a single high-intensity application.
4. Environment and Post-processing: Impact on Yield and Stability
-
The ambient temperature and humidity shall be stable
-
Large temperature differences and high ambient humidity can cause fluctuations in laser power, resulting in inconsistent color depth among workpieces from the same batch.
-
Pay attention to equipment heat dissipation in summer, as power attenuation will directly affect the color rendering; when the temperature is too low in winter, warm up the equipment before turning it on.
-
Do not use alcohol or steel wool for vigorous wiping after marking
-
The oxide layer of laser color engraving is very thin, and prolonged soaking in alcohol or vigorous wiping may cause the color to fade or even disappear completely.
-
For daily cleaning, simply wipe gently with a soft cloth and clean water. If scratch resistance is required, a transparent protective coating can be applied after marking (note that the coating must not corrode the oxide layer).
-
Avoid direct contact with strong acids and strong bases after marking
-
The colored stainless steel engraving layer is subject to corrosion, discoloration and graying in strong acid and strong alkali environments, so it is not suitable for workpieces that come into direct contact with such media.
III. Preparations Before Metal Color Engraving
1. Create a test matrix
The outcome of metal color engraving may be affected by multiple factors such as laser power, material type, ambient humidity and temperature fluctuations. Stainless steel or titanium materials are recommended for color engraving.
Therefore, it is recommended to first use material testing matrix function testing materials to identify the required colors. Record and save the corresponding settings to ensure high-quality engraving results and consistent color for colored engraving.
An example of the test matrix is shown in the following figure:
2. Processing Effect Evaluation
A material test matrix fabricated by defocus engraving on metal materials (after focusing, adjust the Z-axis to move upward, and defocus engraving is more prone to producing multiple colors). After the processing is completed, evaluate the results and follow the steps below:
-
If you are satisfied with the color result in a specific grid, please record this set of parameter settings, including the processing speed and power.
-
If you want to improve the color quality, locate the target color and its corresponding processing speed and power, then generate a bidirectional gradient test array by adjusting the settings to fine-tune the power and speed.
3. Save the color swatch file
After the color debugging of the matrix to be tested meets your satisfaction, save the final matrix file for subsequent use.
IV. Carving Operation
1. Color Carving Image Editing
Click "Browse" to select the previously saved color swatch file
Click on each cell of the matrix, and fill in the corresponding color for each cell according to the actual printed color effect, so as to facilitate the use of this matrix file for color carving later.
After adjusting the color, click OK
Click on each color layer, then click "Select Layer Color" to select the tiles with similar colors.
After all color layers have been selected, click "Generate Color Carving File"
2. Pattern Editing
Once the pattern is generated, it will be visible in the object list, where each color layer is separated into a distinct object. You can then perform edits such as scaling on the objects intended for engraving.
3. Start Marking
Take out a stainless steel plate with a clean surface, focus on the material according to the previously tested parameters, and defocus it to a certain height. The defocus distance of the matrix file in the example is 5mm, which means focusing on the material first and then lifting the z-axis by 5mm.
Click to preview, move the material to the proper position, then lower the protective cover and click to engrave.
