No. Standard arc-welding helmets are designed to block UV and IR from electric arcs, not focused laser radiation at 1064nm. Laser welding requires a helmet with a specific OD (optical density) rating — typically OD8+ for fiber lasers — to safely block the beam wavelength. Using the wrong helmet risks permanent eye damage.
It depends on your work environment. Laser welding produces metal fumes and fine particulates, especially on coated or painted surfaces. If you're working in enclosed spaces or doing extended sessions, a helmet with a built-in respirator or PAPR (powered air-purifying respirator) provides both eye and lung protection in one unit.
